Cal Fire firefighter Robert Hernandez, 38, was arrested on suspicion of arson after allegedly setting five fires in Sonoma County while off duty. The fires, including the Alexander Fire, Windsor River Road Fire, Geysers Fire, and Geyser and Kinley fires, were all contained quickly, burning less than an acre combined. Hernandez was arrested at the Howard Forest Fire Station and will be booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of arson to forest land. Cal Fire Director Joe Tyler expressed his dismay, stating that such actions tarnish the work of the agency's 12,000 employees. Cal Fire has urged the public to report suspicious activities and provided contact information for their arson hotline. As of September 1, 2024, Cal Fire has arrested 91 suspected arsonists this year.
