MLS Introduces Cash Player Trade System
Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced significant changes to its roster rules and regulations ahead of the 2025 season, introducing a new cash-based internal trade system. Teams can now use unlimited cash to acquire players from other MLS clubs, a departure from the previous reliance on General Allocation Money (GAM) and other assets. Each club is allowed to acquire and trade away up to two players per year for cash, with the amounts disclosed publicly. This move is expected to create more opportunities for player movement within the league and to incentivize player development. Additionally, the secondary transfer window will be adjusted to align more closely with the global transfer market, running from July 24 to August 21, 2025. The changes aim to modernize MLS's trading practices and could facilitate in-league moves for players seeking transfers, enhancing the overall competitiveness of the league.
