Gospel Icon Huey P. Williams of Jackson Southernaires Dies at 80
Huey P. Williams, the beloved lead singer of the Jackson Southernaires, passed away peacefully at his home in Smithdale, Mississippi, on March 24, 2025, at the age of 80. A trailblazer in traditional gospel music, Williams was known for his signature voice and soulful storytelling, having been a prominent figure in the genre for over five decades. He was part of a musical family, being the elder brother of Frank Williams, founder of the Mississippi Mass Choir, and of members of the Williams Brothers. His brother Doug praised him for his humble spirit and the positive impact he had on many lives. The Jackson Southernaires, formed in 1940, gained fame with hits like “The Greatest Creator” and “Too Late,” and their legacy continues to influence gospel music. A musical celebration and funeral services are scheduled to honor his memory on March 28 and 29, 2025.
