Arla dairy farm staff filmed abusing cows in Yorkshire

An undercover investigation by the Animal Justice Project has revealed shocking footage of abuse at a Yorkshire dairy farm supplying Arla, the UK's largest milk producer. Workers were filmed kicking, punching, and striking cows, as well as slapping calves separated from their mothers, with the footage prompting Arla to suspend the farmer involved, labeling the acts as 'completely unacceptable.' The investigation has raised urgent concerns regarding animal welfare standards and has led to a formal complaint to Trading Standards, which describes the abuse as 'illegal and immoral.' Claire Palmer, Director of the Animal Justice Project, criticized industry-run assurance schemes for failing to protect animals and called for legal action and accountability from supermarkets profiting from such farms. The footage also highlighted unsanitary conditions, overcrowding, and violations of UK transport laws, with experts expressing deep concern over the treatment of the animals. Former Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Alick Simmons noted that while large farms can face challenges, the level of cruelty depicted in the video is indefensible.
