Imelda Offshore; Bay of Bengal Depression Approaches
A low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression by Oct. 2 and cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast around Oct. 3, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30–60 km/h and prompting advisories for fishermen. In the U.S., a broad dry pattern with building high pressure will produce mostly dry, warm to hot conditions this week; Albuquerque’s monsoon is essentially over (about 3.05 in. at the Sunport) and little additional rain is expected in New Mexico. Gulf Coast and Southeast locations will see continued heat and low humidity into midweek with daytime highs near the 90s before cooler, more comfortable mornings and falllike afternoons arrive as high pressure builds. The Northeast should get one more warm day in the 70s–80s before a breezy, noticeably cooler midweek with highs falling into the 60s and overnight lows in the 40s–50s. Offshore tropical systems Imelda and Humberto are strengthening but tracking away from the U.S.; their primary local impacts will be larger swell, rough surf, elevated rip-current risk and some gusty coastal winds. Overall, most areas will remain dry through the week, with the next organized rain chance generally holding off until late weekend or early next week for some regions.
