The Cottam Solar Project has received development consent from the UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, marking it as a significant infrastructure project in the East Midlands. Developed by Island Green Power, the project includes three electricity-generating stations with a total expected capacity exceeding 600MW, capable of powering around 180,000 homes. The project spans 1,150 hectares and involves solar arrays, energy storage, and grid connection infrastructure. This approval follows an extensive public examination process, which considered local input and evidence before making recommendations. The project is part of the Labour government's push to decarbonize the electricity sector by 2030, with a focus on increasing renewable energy capacity. This marks the fourth large-scale solar project approved by the government since taking office in July, totaling nearly 2GW of consented PV capacity.
