Punjab Considers Lockdown Amid Smog Crisis
The Punjab province in Pakistan has declared a health emergency due to severe smog, leading to the closure of schools and universities, which will conduct online classes, and a possible lockdown in major cities like Lahore and Multan. The smog, caused by emissions, construction activities, and crop burning, has led to Lahore being ranked as the world's most polluted city, with AQI levels soaring to hazardous levels. As a result, the government has imposed restrictions, including a ban on construction activities, limited restaurant operations, and restrictions on public gatherings in parks and the entry of heavy vehicles into cities. Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that a complete lockdown might be imposed over weekends if air quality does not improve. The emergency measures come as residents face increased health risks, with hospitals preparing for a surge in respiratory illness cases. The provincial government is also working on long-term solutions to combat air pollution, including the introduction of e-buses.
