Global tech companies achieved an average reduction of 49% in business flight emissions in 2023 compared to 2019, but major players like Apple and Google's parent Alphabet are lagging without specific reduction targets, risking a return to pre-pandemic levels. Alphabet recorded a mere 23% drop in emissions, while Apple managed 31%, both significantly lower than their peers. Only seven out of the 26 companies analyzed by Transport & Environment (T&E) have set formal targets for emissions reduction. This raises concerns about the credibility of tech firms' claims to be climate leaders, as highlighted by T&E's corporate travel manager, Denise Auclair. Apple stated it has cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 55% since 2015 as part of its broader carbon-neutral goal by 2030, but lacks a specific travel emissions target. The findings emphasize the need for clear and targeted sustainability goals as business travel resumes post-pandemic.
