Banff Rockslide Kills Two, Survivor Credits Friend’s Bravery
Khaled Elgamal, a 28-year-old financial adviser, survived a deadly rockslide at Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park that claimed the life of his 33-year-old roommate and close friend, Hamza Benhilal. The two had been housemates in British Columbia after moving from Egypt and Morocco respectively to pursue MBA degrees and careers. During their vacation, Benhilal heroically warned Elgamal to run as the rockslide began, saving his life though he was unable to escape himself. Elgamal suffered serious injuries, including fractured pelvis and shoulder, but managed to seek help after the event. Benhilal’s sacrifice and their strong friendship were deeply felt by Elgamal, who described him as like a big brother and expressed ongoing shock and trauma from the experience. The tragedy also resulted in the death of another hiker, a 70-year-old retired educator, highlighting the sudden danger posed by natural rockfalls in the area.
