Malaysia Economy Minister Rafizi Resigns After Party Poll Defeat

Malaysia's Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli announced his resignation from the Cabinet, effective June 17, following his defeat in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president election to Nurul Izzah Anwar. Rafizi stated that his loss meant he no longer held the mandate to carry out his party’s reform agenda in government, prompting his decision to step down and return to grassroots political work. He submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and will use his remaining annual leave until his resignation takes effect. Rafizi emphasized his commitment to political accountability and acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Economy staff during his tenure, expressing confidence in the continuation of ongoing economic programs. The resignation follows Rafizi’s earlier pledge to resign if not re-elected in the party leadership race. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim declined to comment on Rafizi’s resignation when asked at a public event.
