Myanmar officers detained
In a significant setback for Myanmar's junta, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) has captured the Northeast Regional Military Headquarters in Lashio, along with several senior army officers, including Maj. Gen. Soe Tint. This marks the first time insurgents have taken control of a military command headquarters since the 2021 coup that overthrew the civilian government. Communication with the captured officers has been lost, as confirmed by junta spokesperson Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, who also indicated that verification of their status is ongoing. Analysts suggest this loss could lead to further military setbacks in the region, reflecting the growing strength of armed resistance against the junta amid ongoing economic and social turmoil. The MNDAA's victory is part of a broader alliance of ethnic rebel groups that have intensified their operations against military rule, particularly following the violent crackdown on protests in 2021.
