China has dominated the global race for generative AI patents, filing over 38,000 patents between 2014 and 2023, which is six times more than the 6,276 patents filed by the United States, according to a new report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Generative AI inventions account for 54,000 patents globally, with more than a quarter of these filed in the last year alone, highlighting the rapid growth of the technology. WIPO's report indicates that generative AI, which includes tools like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, is being widely adopted across various sectors such as life sciences, manufacturing, and telecommunications. The report also noted that Chinese companies, including Tencent, Baidu, and ByteDance, are among the top GenAI patent applicants. Despite concerns about job displacement and intellectual property issues, the surge in patent filings reflects the significant potential and ongoing technological advancements in generative AI.
