Russian Delegation Discusses Defence, Aid, Energy with Syrian Leaders in Damascus
Following the ousting of longtime ally Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Russia has intensified diplomatic efforts to solidify its relationship with Syria's new leadership. A high-level Russian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak recently visited Damascus to discuss defence cooperation, economic recovery, humanitarian aid, and regional stability. Russia aims to leverage its unique network of contacts in the Middle East to help stabilize Syria and support the restoration of its energy sector, which suffered heavily during the civil war. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani expressed the importance of Russia's support in rebuilding Syria and emphasized that any foreign presence must aim to help the Syrian people build their future. This visit follows a series of diplomatic engagements, including earlier meetings between Syrian and Russian officials, underscoring Moscow's commitment to maintaining a significant role in Syria's reconstruction and regional influence despite the leadership change. Russia also advocates for the lifting of international sanctions to facilitate Syria's economic recovery.
