TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy Launch Major Iraq Gas Growth Projects
TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy, and Iraq’s Ministry of Oil and Basra Oil Company have launched the final two major projects under Iraq’s $27 billion Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP): the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP) and the full development of the Ratawi oil field. The CSSP will process and transport 5 million barrels of seawater daily to southern oil fields, replacing freshwater use and freeing up about 250,000 cubic meters of freshwater for agriculture, helping to ease regional water stress. The Ratawi field redevelopment aims to increase oil production to 120,000 barrels per day by early 2026 and 210,000 barrels per day by 2028, with associated gas processed to supply electricity to 1.5 million households, while eliminating routine gas flaring. The GGIP, a multi-energy initiative including gas, oil, solar, and water projects, is designed to boost Iraq’s electricity supply, support energy independence, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project is led by TotalEnergies (45%, operator), QatarEnergy (25%), and Basra Oil Company (30%), and is expected to create thousands of jobs for Iraqis during construction. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani highlighted the agreements as evidence of Iraq’s improving investment climate and commitment to economic growth and energy sustainability.
