Cargo Ship Ruby Docks in Great Yarmouth

The MV Ruby, a Russian cargo ship carrying 20,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, is set to dock at the Port of Great Yarmouth on October 28, 2024, after being anchored off Margate for weeks. The ship faced entry denials from various European ports due to concerns over its hazardous cargo, which is significantly more than that involved in the 2020 Beirut explosion. Following negotiations, the ship will transfer its cargo to another vessel and then undergo necessary repairs. UK authorities, including MP Sir Roger Gale, have assured the public that the cargo poses no immediate risk, stating that it is safe and that the ship is not unseaworthy despite damage incurred during storms. The agreement for transshipment was facilitated by Peel Ports Group and Serenity Ship Management. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in managing hazardous materials at sea amid international safety regulations.
