Scotland Enacts Safe Access Zones for Abortion

The Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) (Scotland) Act 2024 will take effect on September 24, creating 200-meter protected zones around facilities providing abortion services to prevent harassment and intimidation from anti-abortion protesters. The legislation, overwhelmingly supported by the Scottish Parliament, aims to ensure that women can access necessary healthcare without facing unwanted influence or distress. MSP Gillian Mackay, who led the initiative, highlighted the long-standing issue of protesters creating a hostile environment for patients and medical staff. While the Act upholds the right to free speech, it emphasizes that such rights do not extend to interfering with women's medical decisions. Health Minister Jenni Minto echoed gratitude for those who contributed to the Act and reinforced the Scottish Government's commitment to protecting women's access to healthcare.
