Mother Pleads Guilty to Child Neglect Charges

Angel Schonabaum, a mother from Evansville, Indiana, pleaded guilty to multiple felony counts of neglect after her infant son suffered over 50 rat bites, resulting in severe injuries, including disfigurement. Although she was not present during the incident on September 13, 2023, prosecutors emphasized her responsibility for the hazardous living conditions that led to the child's injuries. Schonabaum was sentenced to four years in prison, with credit for time served, while her husband, David, received a 16-year sentence for his role in the neglect. As part of her sentence, she is prohibited from contacting her children and must undergo a mental health evaluation. Prosecutor Diana Moers highlighted the importance of maintaining a safe living environment and noted that the father was solely responsible for the home during the incident, justifying the disparity in their sentences. The family had previously received assistance from child services to rectify the unsafe conditions, but efforts were reportedly ineffective.
