His tenure saw the continuation of the Horizon IT inquiry, which revealed that over 900 subpostmasters were wrongfully prosecuted based on faulty information. MPs expressed a lack of confidence in Read's leadership, though an investigation cleared him of misconduct allegations. Neil Brocklehurst, the interim COO, is expected to assume Read’s responsibilities as he prepares to give evidence at the inquiry. Former CEO Paula Vennells, who preceded Read, forfeited her CBE due to her handling of the crisis.
