Wolf Conservation Efforts Progress in Multiple States

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has completed its second year of reintroducing gray wolves, releasing 15 wolves from British Columbia to Eagle and Pitkin counties. CPW is addressing conflicts with ranchers through a 'Range Riders' program, recruiting individuals to patrol ranches and protect livestock from wolves, after 17 confirmed wolf depredations involving 27 animals. Meanwhile, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has successfully captured and fitted satellite collars on 12 gray wolves across three packs, marking a record for the state's wolf monitoring efforts. This operation, conducted in January 2025, involved collecting DNA samples to monitor diseases and genetic relationships among packs. The Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary in Texas emphasizes understanding wolf pack dynamics, noting that natural packs are family-based. These efforts reflect ongoing challenges and strategies in wolf conservation and management across different states.
