Mozambique Discusses $20 Billion LNG Project with TotalEnergies CEO

Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo met with TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne to discuss the stalled $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which has faced delays since its suspension in 2021 due to security concerns in the Cabo Delgado region. Originally planned to resume construction by late 2024 and begin production by 2029, the project remains on hold as the force majeure declaration has not been lifted. During the meeting, Pouyanne reiterated TotalEnergies' commitment to the project, emphasizing its significance for Mozambique's economic growth. However, the project has faced scrutiny from NGOs and European lawmakers over human rights violations linked to local military actions. Chapo acknowledged the ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and attract necessary investments for infrastructure development, which is critical for the project's advancement.
