The number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats has surpassed the total for 2023, with 29,578 crossings recorded so far in 2024, compared to 29,437 last year. This increase comes despite government efforts to curb crossings, such as the arrest of smugglers and attempts to dismantle smuggling networks. The death toll has also risen sharply, with at least 56 fatalities reported this year, compared to 12 last year. Critics, including former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, argue that the current government's policies are failing to deter crossings, particularly after the scrapping of the Rwanda scheme. Maritime experts suggest that the final figure for 2024 could reach between 35,000 and 40,000, depending on weather conditions. The situation poses significant challenges for the Labour government, which has faced criticism for its handling of immigration issues.
