Jess Naz Racist Abuse After Spurs League Cup Win
Tottenham forward Jess Naz said she was “done being quiet” after receiving racial abuse in her Instagram DMs following Spurs’ Women’s League Cup penalty-shootout win over Aston Villa. The 24-year-old England international, who started and was withdrawn at half-time in the 0-0 match that Tottenham won 7-6 on penalties, publicly condemned the messages. Tottenham described the abuse as “disgusting”, “disgraceful” and “cowardly”, and pledged to work with authorities and social media platforms to identify the perpetrator and take the strongest action. The case reflects a wider problem in the women’s game: a Women in Football survey found 78% of women working in football experienced discrimination in the past year, with higher rates and lower optimism among those from under-represented ethnic minorities. The research also showed over a third of respondents did not report abuse, and Tottenham reiterated there is no place for racism in sport as investigations continue.
