Holtec Establishes Small Modular Reactor Factory in South Yorkshire

US nuclear energy company Holtec has selected South Yorkshire as the site for its new £1.5bn Small Modular Reactor (SMR) factory, which aims to serve markets in the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. The decision follows a competitive evaluation of 13 locations, highlighting South Yorkshire's engineering heritage and skilled workforce as key factors. This facility is expected to create approximately 3,000 high-skilled jobs over the next two decades, reinforcing the region's position as a hub for clean technology. Holtec's commitment includes ensuring that at least 70% of materials and services are sourced locally, enhancing supply chain opportunities. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard emphasized the region's readiness to lead in the clean energy transition, following similar investments from other companies like Rolls-Royce SMR. The factory marks a significant step in the UK's nuclear revival efforts, showcasing Holtec's trust in local capabilities.
