US Increases Aid and Security Support to Haiti
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced an additional $60 million in humanitarian assistance to Haiti during her visit. This aid aims to address critical needs in nutrition, food security, shelter, water, and sanitation services, bringing the total U.S. assistance to over $165 million this fiscal year. Thomas-Greenfield also revealed that the U.S. Department of Defense will increase mine-resistant vehicles for a UN-backed multinational security mission led by Kenya, aimed at combating gang violence. The Kenyan contingent of 400 police officers has been deployed to support Haiti's national police. The visit underscores international support for Haiti's new transitional government led by Prime Minister Garry Conille and emphasizes the need for political reform and democratic elections. Gang violence since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse has displaced over 578,000 people and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with nearly half of Haiti's population facing acute hunger.
