Lee Fire Becomes Colorado’s Fifth-Largest Wildfire Burning 113,000 Acres
The Lee Fire in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, has become the fifth-largest wildfire in state history, burning over 113,000 acres with just 7% containment amid extreme fire weather and drought conditions. The fire, started by lightning on August 2, has rapidly spread due to high winds and critically low fuel moisture, threatening the town of Meeker, local infrastructure, and prompting multiple evacuation orders, including the evacuation of nearly 180 inmates from the Rifle Correctional Center. Firefighters, supported by air resources and crews from across the country, continue to build firelines and strengthen containment around critical areas such as State Highway 13 and County Road 5, although extreme conditions persist. The nearby Elk Fire, also started by lightning, has burned around 14,635 acres and reached 30% containment, showing more progress compared to the Lee Fire. Authorities have issued red flag warnings and evacuation alerts, urging residents to stay informed through local resources and take precautions against wildfire smoke. A community meeting was scheduled to provide updates, and Governor Jared Polis has declared a disaster emergency, deploying the National Guard to assist firefighting efforts.
