COP16 Adopts Landmark Biodiversity Agreements in Colombia

The 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) took place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024, attracting representatives from over 180 nations. A key outcome was the establishment of a new subsidiary body to enhance the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in biodiversity conservation. Additionally, Brazil launched a Protocol of Intent aimed at strengthening its biodiversity strategies, which includes innovative financing mechanisms and commitments to combat wildlife trafficking. The conference emphasized the need for practical frameworks and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) tailored to individual countries' needs. Discussions at COP16 also focused on mobilizing resources for biodiversity protection and aligning global agendas to prioritize ecosystem health. The event was marked by significant contributions from various stakeholders, including government representatives, conservation organizations, and the private sector, particularly from China and Brazil.
