Scientists Discover 190 New Species in 2024

A recent study has identified a new species of snake in Ethiopia, named Broadley’s African house snake, which is genetically distinct and can grow over 4 feet long. The snake has an olive green body and lives in various habitats from woodlands to grasslands. Researchers conducted DNA analysis on previously collected samples and newly caught specimens, leading to this discovery, named after British herpetologist Donald George Broadley. In addition, the Natural History Museum has reported a remarkable year in 2024, having described 190 new species across various environments, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity for environmental health. Among these discoveries are a piranha named after the 'Lord Sauron' character from the 'Lord of the Rings' and a dinosaur specimen found in the UK. Scientists stress that understanding and naming new species is crucial for conservation efforts and maintaining ecological balance.
