Guinea Holds Controversial Constitutional Referendum Amid Military Rule Concerns
Guinea held a referendum on a new constitution that could allow the military leader, General Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup, to run for president and extend presidential terms from five to seven years. The vote, critical for the country's transition from military to civilian rule, faced opposition boycotts amid a crackdown on dissent, with major opposition parties suspended and political opponents allegedly disappeared. Although the referendum is positioned as a step toward elections expected in December, critics argue it strengthens the military's hold on power and limits political competition by making it harder for parties to run. Despite Doumbouya's initial vow not to run, the new constitution would enable military members to seek office and create a Senate partly appointed by the president. Voter turnout of at least 50 percent was required for approval, but the opposition's boycott and information suppression raised concerns about the referendum's transparency and fairness. International observers, including the UN Human Rights Office, called for a peaceful and transparent process amid the tense political climate in Guinea.
