Hundreds Affordable Homes Opening, Underway Across UK, Australia, Canada
Affordable and social housing projects are advancing in multiple regions to address housing shortages and support vulnerable populations. In Leeds, UK, 50 new affordable homes have been built on a former factory site, with a majority reserved for people on the council’s housing register, marking progress in the city's plan to build 8,000 affordable homes across Yorkshire. Queensland's Crisafulli Government is investing $5.6 billion to construct 53,500 new social and community homes by 2044, with nearly 500 homes under contract or construction in the Darling Downs region, aiming to reverse previous housing deficits and support vulnerable Queenslanders. In Quesnel, British Columbia, a five-story building with 35 affordable rental homes is under construction, prioritizing Indigenous households and those with low to moderate incomes, set to open in 2027; this project is part of B.C.'s $19 billion housing initiative and supported by approximately $23 million from the province. The Quesnel Tillicum Society will operate the homes, providing culturally appropriate support and services to foster a vibrant, intergenerational community. These projects collectively highlight significant government and community efforts to increase affordable housing availability and provide tailored support to diverse populations in need.
