Rams' Matthew Stafford Expected to Start Texans Opener Despite Back Injury
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is expected to start the season opener against the Houston Texans after missing nearly a month of training camp due to a back injury, head coach Sean McVay confirmed. Stafford returned to practice on August 18 and has fully participated in team drills over the past two weeks, demonstrating recovery from an aggravated disk in his back. Entering his 17th NFL season, Stafford completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in the 2024 season, leading the Rams to an NFC West title. Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took first-team reps while Stafford was sidelined and will serve as the primary backup with Stetson Bennett as the third-string quarterback. Left tackle Alaric Jackson, sidelined earlier this year with blood clots, is also progressing toward playing in the opener. Stafford’s return brings stability to a Rams offense featuring veteran receiver Davante Adams, whom Stafford has yet to play with in a game.
