Cool Mornings; Showers Return, Mount Hood Snow
A broad ridge of high pressure is producing cool, dry mornings (40s–50s) and mostly sunny, mild afternoons (60s–80s) across much of the country, with some areas rebounding into the 70s–80s by weekend. The settled, dry pattern should persist into the weekend, improving falllike conditions but exacerbating drought concerns and producing warmer-than-normal readings in spots such as Boston. A rotating offshore low in the Pacific Northwest has produced only hit-or-miss light showers so far but has brought fresh high-elevation snow on Mount Hood. That pattern is expected to shift late this weekend into next week as the high eases east; onshore flow, stationary fronts, or an approaching upper-level low/cold front will likely return scattered, generally light showers across parts of the Southeast, Mid‑Atlantic, New England and the Four Corners/Southwest. Offshore tropical systems Imelda and Humberto are forecast to remain away from U.S. landfall (Imelda near Bermuda), but both will generate large surf and dangerous rip currents along the East Coast and New England shores.
