Nicholas Carter, 31, convicted of aggravated assault against a 14-month-old child, attempted to flee the Somerset County Superior Courthouse in Skowhegan, Maine, on Wednesday. Handcuffed, Carter ran through the courthouse, down a hallway, out into the street, and across a parking lot, dodging obstacles. He was pursued by various individuals, including two jurors and a detective, and eventually tripped in a yard where the jurors subdued him until the detective arrived. The escape attempt was caught on video. Carter, who was out on bail before the trial, now faces an additional charge of escape, with sentencing for the assault conviction pending in the coming weeks. Despite the dramatic escape attempt, no injuries were reported.
