The protest by Indian truck drivers against the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita law, which increases the penalty for hit-and-run accidents, has caused extensive fuel shortages, with around 2,000 petrol stations running out of fuel. The strike has also disrupted 90% of fuel supply to Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Jammu and Kashmir Fuel Station Owners' Association. The state still has a 21-day diesel and 24-day petrol stock. The law, replacing the Indian Penal Code, has been criticized by private bus and truck drivers as too harsh and potentially exposing drivers to public violence. India's home secretary is scheduled to discuss the strike with the All India Motor Transport Congress.
