Iran Executes Attacker in 2023 Azerbaijani Embassy Shooting

Iran executed Yasin Hosseinzadeh, the man convicted of the January 2023 attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran, which resulted in the death of the embassy's head of security and injuries to two others. The attack severely strained relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, with Azerbaijan condemning it as a terrorist act, while Iran described it as motivated by personal issues. Hosseinzadeh reportedly carried out the attack believing his wife was hiding in the embassy and unwilling to meet him. The incident led to the temporary closure of Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran and reciprocal expulsions of diplomats. Despite tensions, there have been recent efforts to improve bilateral relations, including high-level visits and joint military exercises. Azerbaijan reopened its embassy in Tehran in mid-2024 following the sentencing and execution of the attacker.
