Tens of Thousands Observe Ashura Amid Tight Security in Pakistan, Iraq, Sindh
Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, is being observed with deep religious reverence and solemnity across Pakistan and in the Iraqi city of Karbala, marking the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. In Pakistan, extensive security measures have been implemented nationwide, including deployment of over 50,000 police and Rangers personnel, a ban on pillion riding, road closures, and suspension of mobile phone and internet services in key areas to prevent untoward incidents during mourning processions. Major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi have witnessed large processions following traditional routes, culminating in evening gatherings such as Sham-e-Ghareeban. Meanwhile, in Karbala, tens of thousands of Shiite pilgrims, including many from Iran, Gulf states, Lebanon, and Pakistan, have arrived amid tight security to perform traditional mourning rituals, with some chanting against Israel and the United States and displaying support for Iran-backed groups, reflecting ongoing regional tensions. The observance in both countries underscores Ashura's significance as a symbol of resistance against tyranny and injustice, with heightened security reflecting the sensitive political and religious context. These commemorations unify the faithful in mourning and remembrance despite contrasting local challenges and geopolitical dynamics.
