Maryland Joins IRS Direct File Program for 2025

Maryland has officially joined the IRS Direct File program for the 2025 tax season, enabling over 700,000 residents to file their taxes online for free. This initiative, made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to simplify tax filing and reduce costs, following a successful pilot in 12 states where it helped claim over $90 million in refunds and saved taxpayers approximately $5.6 million in preparation fees. Maryland's Comptroller Brooke Lierman emphasized the program's role in modernizing government services, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen highlighted its potential benefits for taxpayers. The Direct File system will provide a convenient and secure option, ensuring taxpayers receive the deductions and benefits they are entitled to. This expansion reflects a commitment to making tax processes more accessible and affordable for all Marylanders. Other states, including Oregon and Pennsylvania, have also adopted the program, indicating a growing trend toward simplified tax filing nationally.
