Spectrum, first European orbital rocket, crashes seconds after launch in Norway
The Spectrum rocket, developed by German start-up Isar Aerospace, made its inaugural flight from Norway's Andoya Spaceport but crashed back to Earth seconds after launch on March 30. The unmanned rocket, designed for orbital launches, experienced issues shortly after liftoff, leading to a powerful explosion as it fell into the sea. Isar Aerospace had downplayed expectations, stating that the primary goal was data collection rather than reaching orbit. Despite the crash, co-founder Daniel Metzler described the mission as a success, highlighting that the flight lasted 30 seconds and allowed for the validation of critical systems. The event marks a significant step for Europe’s private space industry, with Isar Aerospace planning to develop additional rockets for future launches. No injuries or damage beyond the rocket itself were reported, and the launch pad remained intact.
