46th ASEAN Summit Opens in Malaysia Addressing US Tariffs, Myanmar Crisis, Trade Integration
The 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur has drawn regional leaders to address pressing challenges including US tariffs, the Myanmar conflict, and South China Sea disputes. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chairing the summit, highlighted concerns over the erosion of multilateralism and the impact of US tariffs that range from 10% to 49%, urging for an ASEAN-US summit to resolve trade tensions. Despite these challenges, Anwar expressed confidence in ASEAN's resilience and its commitment to an open, inclusive, rules-based international order. The summit also focused on strengthening regional economic integration and diversifying markets as emphasized by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, amidst global trade disruptions caused by protectionism. Furthermore, ASEAN engaged with Timor-Leste on its aspiration for full membership, with bilateral talks reinforcing cooperation in education, capacity building, and regional connectivity. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Indonesia underscored concerns about rising unilateralism and protectionism globally, echoing calls for solidarity and dialogue among Global South countries to navigate current geopolitical and economic uncertainties.
