Montana State Opens Quantum Computing Facility With Rigetti Collaboration
Montana State University (MSU) has launched QCORE, a new research and innovation center dedicated to quantum and photonic systems, equipped with a Rigetti Novera 9-qubit superconducting quantum processing unit (QPU). This makes MSU the first university in the U.S. to have an on-premises Rigetti quantum computer and one of only seven worldwide with both superconducting and photonic quantum computers. Funded in part by a $26 million grant from the Air Force Research Lab, QCORE aims to foster growth in the tech sector by providing test beds for quantum connectivity and supporting research, development, and workforce training. Rigetti Computing and MSU have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on quantum hardware, hybrid quantum systems, enabling technologies, and talent development, enhancing Montana's position in the quantum computing ecosystem. Rigetti CEO Subodh Kulkarni emphasized the importance of hands-on access to quantum technology for research and education, while QCORE CEO Jayne Morrow highlighted the center's role in driving innovation benefiting both Montana and the global community. An open house event is scheduled to introduce the public to the facility and quantum computing advancements.
