Eyeo Secures €15M to Advance Color-Splitting Imaging Technology

Dutch startup Eyeo has raised €15 million in seed funding to commercialize a novel image sensor technology that significantly increases light sensitivity, color accuracy, and resolution by replacing traditional color filters with a vertical waveguide-based color-splitting architecture. Traditional filters, which block most incoming light and limit pixel miniaturization, have long constrained camera quality and efficiency, especially in compact devices like smartphones and AR/VR systems. Eyeo's approach splits light into its component colors using nanophotonic structures, directing each wavelength to the appropriate pixel and allowing nearly all incoming light to be captured. This results in up to triple the sensitivity and double the resolution compared to current sensors, while also shrinking device size and enhancing low-light performance. The funding will support the development of evaluation kits, preparation for large-scale manufacturing, and expansion of commercial partnerships, with first prototypes expected to reach customers within two years. The technology is compatible with existing semiconductor processes, facilitating its integration into mainstream markets.
