British couple Darren Webb and Danielle Davies from Morecambe, Lancashire, were involved in a serious moped crash on the first day of their holiday in Marmaris, Turkey, resulting in severe injuries including a bleed on the brain and multiple broken bones for Darren and a punctured lung and muscle damage for Danielle. Despite holding travel insurance, their provider Admiral refused to cover the £20,000 hospital bill, claiming their policy excluded accidents involving bikes and alleging improper licensing and alcohol involvement, which Danielle contested with blood test results. After 10 days in a Turkish hospital, Darren discharged himself and endured a grueling five-and-a-half-day, 2,560-mile coach journey back home as he was initially unfit to fly. The couple expressed distress over the ordeal, highlighting the language barrier and the trauma of being hospitalized abroad, and stated the experience has deterred them from future foreign travel. Medical staff in Turkey recommended surgery for Darren, but the prohibitive additional cost led them to decline and seek treatment back home.
