Sony Pictures has secured the rights to the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, directed by Zach Cregger, known for his successful horror film 'Barbarian'. The movie, co-written by Shay Hatten, is scheduled for release on September 18, 2026, and aims to return to the franchise's horror roots, staying faithful to the original Capcom video games. Constantin Film, along with PlayStation Productions and other producers, is involved in the production. After a competitive bidding war, Sony maintained its hold on the franchise, which has grossed $1.2 billion worldwide. Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, highlighted the film as a key release for 2026. Cregger expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting his long-standing admiration for the Resident Evil games.
