Air India, under Tata Group's ownership since 2022, has launched a $400 million refurbishment program to modernize 67 older aircraft, including 27 narrow-body Airbus A320neo and 40 wide-body Boeing planes. The upgrade will feature new seats, carpets, curtains, and modern cabin amenities across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes, aiming to enhance the flying experience and position Air India as a luxury carrier. The first aircraft to undergo the refit, an A320neo (VT-EXN), entered the hangar recently and is expected to re-enter service by December 2024. The refurbishment of the narrow-body fleet is slated for completion by mid-2025, followed by the wide-body fleet starting in early 2025. This transformation is part of Tata's broader strategy to revamp Air India, which includes ordering 470 new jets and rebranding efforts.
