Suspected Pirate Attacks Spark Maritime Security Alert Off Somalia

A suspected pirate attack on a Yemeni-flagged dhow off the northern Puntland coast of Somalia has prompted heightened vigilance from the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation Atalanta. The incident, which occurred recently, has led to intense surveillance of the area and calls for merchant vessels to register with the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO) to enhance maritime security. Maritime intelligence firm Ambrey reported that suspects stole three small boats during the attack and sighted a suspected pirate group departing off the coast of Eyl. This incident is part of a concerning resurgence of Somali piracy, which has seen increased activity since November 2023, including several hijackings. Experts warn that successful ransom payments may encourage future attacks on commercial shipping.
