ACCC proposes approval for Virgin, Qatar alliance

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has proposed to approve an alliance between Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways, allowing the latter to operate 28 new weekly return services between Doha and major Australian cities for five years. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey stated that the cooperative conduct is expected to enhance air travel options, providing increased connectivity, convenience, and loyalty benefits for consumers. The arrangement, known as a 'wet lease', involves Virgin using Qatar's aircraft and crew. However, the proposal is still subject to final regulatory approvals, and the ACCC is currently seeking public feedback before making a final decision. Some concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact on Australian workforce laws due to the use of Qatar-based crew. The ACCC had previously granted interim authorization to enable Virgin Australia to begin marketing and selling the new services pending final approvals.
