Mexico City Opens New Frida Kahlo Museum Displaying Unseen Personal Items
A new museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo, Museo Casa Kahlo, will open this fall in Mexico City's Coyoacán district, located in Casa Roja, a historic family residence previously owned by Kahlo's parents and later by her sister Christina's family. The museum, designed by the Rockwell Group, aims to present an intimate portrait of Kahlo’s life, focusing on her personal world, family influences, and previously unseen personal items, including her only known mural. Museo Casa Kahlo will be adjacent to the famed Casa Azul, Kahlo’s childhood home and current museum, expanding the cultural footprint of the Kahlo family legacy. The project is supported by the newly formed Kahlo Foundation, a nonprofit based in New York dedicated to preserving her legacy and promoting Mexican and Latin American arts, which will also launch initiatives such as an art prize and scholarships. The museum will feature rotating contemporary exhibitions emphasizing Mexican, Latin American, and women artists, reflecting Kahlo’s spirit and influence. Kahlo’s closest living relatives, including her grand-niece Mara Romeo Kahlo, emphasize that this museum allows the family’s voice to tell new stories and deepen the public’s understanding of Kahlo as both an artist and a person.
