Milwaukee County Opens $32M Marcia P. Coggs Health Center

The Marcia P. Coggs Health & Human Services Center officially opened on June 13 in Milwaukee’s King Park neighborhood, marking a significant investment in community health and equity. The 60,000-square-foot facility, funded by $32 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds, houses Milwaukee County's Department of Health and Human Services and NourishMKE, the largest community food center network in the city. Named after Marcia P. Coggs, the first African American woman elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly, the center provides a broad range of services including behavioral health, housing and energy assistance, child and veteran services, and on-site food pantry access. Officials emphasized the center as a community lifeline promoting health equity, accessibility, and upstream investment, with a 'No Wrong Door' policy to ensure residents can access behavioral health services without barriers. The building features sustainable design elements, including rooftop solar panels expected to be operational by August, and was completed within budget. The grand opening included local leaders, family members of Coggs, and residents, highlighting the center's role in continuing a legacy of public service and community support.
