UAE Mandates Genetic Testing for Marriage

Starting in January 2025, all Emirati citizens will be required to undergo mandatory genetic testing as part of the premarital screening program, an initiative announced by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP). This policy aims to identify genetic mutations that could affect future generations, promoting long-term wellness and quality of life for Emirati families. The decision, stemming from the Emirates Genome Council, represents a significant shift in UAE's healthcare approach, positioning the nation as a leader in genetic disease prevention and reproductive medicine. MoHAP is collaborating with various health authorities to implement this program, which aligns with the National Genome Strategy to create a comprehensive genetic database for early disease identification. By integrating genetic testing into the marriage process, the UAE seeks to utilize advanced healthcare technologies to enhance public health outcomes.
