The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld the disqualification of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics 50kg freestyle final due to exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams. Despite recognizing the harshness of the rules, CAS emphasized that it is the athlete's responsibility to stay within the weight limit, with no exceptions or tolerances for factors such as hydration or menstrual cycles. Vinesh's appeal for leniency, citing minimal excess weight and the need for hydration, was rejected. CAS acknowledged the draconian nature of the consequences but stated they are bound by the rules, which apply equally to all participants. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Vinesh have expressed disappointment with the decision. Vinesh had previously won three bouts to reach the final but was disqualified before the gold medal match.
