Wales rail fares to rise 4.6% from March 2

Starting March 2, 2025, rail fares in Wales will increase by an overall average of 4.6%, with specific increases ranging from 3% for Anytime Day Single fares to 6% for Anytime Day Return and Off-Peak Return fares. This decision, made by the Welsh Government, aligns with similar fare increases introduced by the UK Government. Transport Secretary Ken Skates acknowledged that while fare hikes are unwelcome, they are necessary to balance revenue collection and reduce reliance on taxpayer subsidies for Transport for Wales (TfW). The fare adjustments come amid ongoing dissatisfaction among passengers due to persistent disruptions and incomplete infrastructure improvements on the Core Valley Lines. Critics, including the Welsh Conservative Party, are urging the government to prioritize service enhancements to justify the fare increases. Skates emphasized a strategic shift towards reducing subsidies by growing the farebox, particularly in discretionary service areas.
